The Canyon has been inhabited for around 5,000 years. The society that built the structures seems to have collapsed around 1300 although a number of groups descended from the Ancestral Puebloans still live in Arizona.  The Canyon de Chelly is located on the Navajo Reservation. The Navajo people traditionally live in small round wood houses (hogans) topped with soil.
